Summary
DescriptionFRPUN-20230119-XX0014-080.jpg |
English: Pictured: Newly acquired future Multi Role Ocean Surveillance Ship (MROS) in No.7 Dock, Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, Liverpool. The distinctive blue-white Topaz Tangaroa, which has arrived at the Cammell Laird yard in Birkenhead today (19 Jan 2023). Will become the UK’s first ship dedicated to safeguarding vital seabed telecommunications cables and oil and gas pipelines, beginning operations in just six months’ time.Military equipment will be installed and the ship painted grey before the ship– the first of two planned Multi-Role Oceanographic Survey (MROS) vessels – begins training with the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ready for its first front-line operations this summer. As the first ships dedicated to safeguarding seabed telecommunications cables and oil and gas pipelines, the 98 metre long, adaptable offshore patrol vessel will act as a‘mother ship’, operating remote and autonomous offboard systems for underwater surveillance and seabed warfare, vital to our national security.Shortly after arriving at Cammell Laird, the ship will be repainted and have critical military equipment installed, before taking up its role as the first of two Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance (MROS) ships, operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) later this year. The vessel will be formally handed over to control of the Royal Navy in the next few days, several months ahead of schedule. |
