English: THIS BATTERY WAS ERECTED ON THE LEE FAMILY ESTATE BY ROBERT E. LEE TO BLOCK UNION SHIPS FROM SAILING UP THE POTOMAC RIVER TO REACH WASHINGTON. IT WAS ABANDONED IN 1862 AS THE THEATER OF BATTLE MOVED SOUTHWARD
