Summary

Description A McDonnell Douglas Phantom FG.1 (F-4K) of No. 892 Squadron launching from the British aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal (R09), in September 1971. Note the massive reheat of the Rolls-Royce Spey engines, which used to buckle the decks of U.S. Navy carriers, when a F-4K was occasionally launched. The photo was taken during cross-deck operations with the U.S. Navy carrier USS Independence (CVA-62) during the NATO exercise "Royal Knight" in the North Atlantic.
