English: This miniaturized tape recorder is a backup for one that flew on Explorer 3 , launched in 1958 to measure cosmic ray flux, mlcrometeorite Impacts, and temperature. Data from this flight confirmed the existence of the Van Allen radiation belts. The University of Iowa refurbished the device in 1981. Picture taken at the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F.
