a from Newcastlebecame completely surrounded by an ice-pack to thenorth-east of Cape Race ; and only escaped thenext day owing to the shifting of the wind, whichopened up a channel behind her and enabled her toget clear. At one time she narrowly escapeddestruction between two 90 feet walls of ice; andthe captain took measurements of one iceberg,3300 feet long and 400 feet high. The Bisley arrived at New York on thesame day as the Madura ; during her passagethrough a similar, or the same, ice-pack she lostthree out of her four propeller blades, and some ofof her plates below the water-line were badly bent. The Canadian Pacific Railway Company enteredinto the shipping business in 1891, and possesses afleet of 63 steamships registering 193,000 tons.Fifteen of these ships were purchased from Elder,Dempster and Co. in 1903. Bothboats are capable of 18 knots, and have accomplishedsome very fine passages, of which may be quoted :Empress of Ireland, 6 days 1 hour 7 min.from Liverpool to Quebec, and ** Empress ofBritain, Rimouski to Liverpool, 5 days 6 hours26 min. On Plate XLVI is shown a wirelesstelegraphy room on one of the C.P.R. steam-ships. The New World is the constant refuge of largenumbers of emigrants from the darkest and mostpoverty-stricken recesses of Europe ; in many casesthey are flying from countries that have not provedto be their motherlands, but harshest of stepfather-lands. Of this class are thousands of Jews forcedout of Russia by oppressive laws. One perhapswonders why the Canadian Pacific Railway and othershipping lines refuse
