The traveller is long enough to accommodate one passenger carriage, which it could move from one road to another in the railway workshops. It was powered by overhead wires - presumably 3 phase AC, given that it has 3 wires. The workshops are now closed and the former carriage workshop is now a performing arts space called Carriageworks.

The railway lines in the background are the tracks between Redfern and Macdonaldtown/Erskineville.
