Summary

Description
English: Depicts the harbour at Castleton, Isle of Man, with Castle Rushen in the background. At the beginning of Sir Walter Scott's Peveril of the Peak (1823), the hero Julian Peveril is staying as a guest of the Countess of Derby in Castle Rushen (or Rushin). The Castle was built around 1200 and was the residence of the last Norse King of Man (d. 1266). Scott did not personally visit the Isle of Man, but received information from his younger brother Thomas who served as an officer in the Manx Fencibles from 1808 to 1810. The original steel engraving was made for the Abbotsford Edition of the Waverley Novels (1842-1847).
