Notes In this painting in the form of a riddle the following "heraldic" poem is represented: "Pupils of Apelles, who celebrate St. Luke, help decorate the olive branch quickly; with our violiers and laurels of Apollo, avoid sad ways voluntarily and hold the peace." In the original Dutchː "Apelles' scholieren, die Sint-Lucas vieren, Wilt helpen versieren den Olyftak snel, Met ons Violieren en Appolo's laurieren, Vlucht droevige manieren willich, houdt Vrede wel." This text was written by Sebastiaen Vranckx, 'factor' (i.e. acting poet) of the rhetorical chamber "De Violieren". The four masters collaborated in the painting of this heraldic riddle for no payment in 1618. It is with this poetic emblem that De Violieren won first prize in a competition organized by another Antwerp Chamber of Rhetoric, "De Olijftak" the same year. The persons in the riddle are partly painted by Francken and van Balen. The animals are the work of Vranckx, while the decorated edge, with the motto "WT IONSTEN VERSAEMT", is by Brueghel.
