About 1746, commissioned by Isaac Smith (1719-1787) of Boston on the occasion of his marriage to the sitter (1726-1786) [1]; 1787, by descent to their son, William Smith (1755-1816); 1816, by descent to his daughter, Elizabeth Storer Smith (Mrs. Edward) Cruft; by descent to her granddaughter, Frances Cordis Cruft (born 1874); 1942, bequest of Frances Cordis Cruft to the MFA. (June 9, 1942)
