Description |
Performance still of Elizabeth Brown from the staged chamber opera Rural Electrification (for voice, theremin and recorded sound, 2006). The image illustrates a body of composition and performance work in Elizabeth Brown's mid-career in the 2000s, her first opera which included staged performance and soprano vocals (by performance artist Stephanie Skaff) dueting with Brown on theremin (pictured), augmented by field recordings of birds, wind, crickets, creaking wood and clanking metal, and video projections of rustic, rural scenes created by artist Lothar Osterburg. This work was publicly performed in prominent venues, discussed widely in prominent art and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a body of work in Elizabeth Brown's mid-career in the 2000s, when she composed her first opera, expanding her thematic range, musical vocabulary( to include vocals) and her mode of presentation (to include staged performance, props and projected imagery). Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize a key developmental phase and shift in her work, which brought her wide recognition from music and art journals, daily press publications, and music institutions. Brown's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Elizabeth Brown, and the work is time-based, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
