Summary

Description
English: On the opening day the return fare from Hastings to Tonbridge, or any intermediate station, was set at a flat rate of 50p. Far more people than expected wanted to travel and the day ended in chaos. With huge numbers of passengers stranded many miles from home, extra trains had to be brought down from London to get them back to their home towns.
