Summary

Description
English: Eccleston Park War Memorial, Liverpool. Height 21 ft. It features a pedestal surmounted by a bronze figure of a youthful soldier raising field glasses to his eyes with his left hand and holding a revolver in his lowered right hand. Here, in the photograph, a young woman with her arm outstretched towards him, offering a branch of laurel, stands at the foot of the plinth. On each side of the pedestal are relief panels. Unveiled in 1922, Walter Gilbert captioned the memorial:"The laurels of the sons are watered from the hearts of the mothers . . .The young mother placing the laurel at the feet of the son, who, by his foot on the Prussian helmet, is crushing the Prussian by his morale." In 1992 when this photo was taken, the memorial was behind railings and a locked gate. The surroundings were much overgrown. Work arranged by Walter Gilbert in association with Louis Weingartner, Donald Gilbert and H. H. Martyn of Cheltenham. Modelling: panels by Walter Gilbert, figures by Louis Weingartner. Casting by H. H. Martyn of Cheltenham. Photo by Phillip Medhurst. Bronzework 1922. Photo 1992. https://www.scribd.com/doc/17256374/Walter-Gilbert-Main-Inventory
