Summary

Description

Eastcourt, was erected in 1889-90 for James Wood, an architect. The architects Blackwell and Dalton supervised the construction, but the design is attributed to Wood himself. The Wood family owned Eastcourt until 1937.

Eastcourt is architecturally significant as a representative example of a boom-period gentleman’s town house. Internally, the main rooms retain the typical elements, such as rich plaster cornice decoration and the distinctive stained glass windows around the main entrance. These elements were typical of the style aspired to by many of the upper middle classes for whom James Wood was designing houses. A likeness etched in glass provided perhaps the ultimate decorative accessory to flatter the vanity of a wealthy Victorian home owner. (Source: Victorian Heritage Database)
