Title
East Main Street Elementary School, photograph
Description

Demolished school in the South of Main neighborhood.

"The original Main Street Elementary School building was constructed in 1876, replacing an earlier suburban school known as the East Friend Street School. The new school was often referred to as the East Main Street School. A fire gutted the structure on February 2, 1898. Eddie Rickenbacker attended this school until 1904, when he had to leave school to work to support his family. The building was rebuilt and later remodeled in 1906, 1925 and 1954. The old building was demolished in 1960 and replaced with a new school which closed in 2006. The building is now occupied by the Columbus Collegiate Academy Main Street Campus, a college preparatory charter school."
