Summary

Description A Chinese sancai glazed phoenix-headed ewer from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), dated late 7th century to early half of the 8th century. This work of art features a molded decoration under a three-color glaze. Central Asian metalwork may have influenced the style and designs of this Chinese ewer. The attachment of the handle to the region of the mouth rim instead of the body indicates a possible Sogdian influence. A mounted archer seen at the center of the vase is performing a "Persian shot" by shooting over his shoulder, an artistic scene found in ornamental Western lexicon.
