English: An Early Medieval copper alloy button brooch. The brooch is circular with an unusual deep, straight sided rim, edges 3.26mm high. On the reverse are two parallel curved lugs 4.65mm high which retain the corroded iron pin in situ.
Within the saucer, the raised design is in the form of a stylised human face with a long, tapering nose branching to form two thick eyebrows. The eyes are small pellets with semi-circles below. The mouth is an open oval below the nose, with two parallel upward curving lines each side perhaps indicating a moustache. |
