English: ER stress and other factors induce insulin resistance in peripheral cells. This increases free fatty acids and the demand for insulin. Both of these factors induce stress in the ER of ß-cells. Prolonged stress, or stress caused by inflammation, can lead to apoptosis in the ß-cells.
