A portrait of UFA federal candidate Edward Garland.

Mr. Garland was an executive member of the United Farmers of Alberta (UFA), 1919-1921, and was elected in 1921 as Member of Parliament for the Bow River constituency as a Progressive Party candidate, and again in 1925. In 1926 he won the seat again again, this time as a United Farmers of Alberta candidate. He was re-elected in 1930, but lost his seat in the 1935 election. Garland served as President of the United Farmers of Alberta in the early 1930s. In 1935 he was appointed Secretary to the High Commissioner of Canada in Dublin; Acting High Commissioner for Canada to Ireland in 1946; Charges d'Affaires for Canada to Denmark; ambassador to Norway in 1947; and ambassador to Iceland in 1949.
