Description

E.V. Haughwout & Co. was a dry-goods retailer who, in its day, was held in such esteem it supplied the Pierce and Lincoln white houses with china. The building that once housed its store from 1857 to 1870 has one New York's earliest surviving cast-iron fronts--according to historian Margot Gayle, the best--and also housed the world's first passenger elevator.

I say a bit more about this fine building on my New York City landmarks blog, The Masterpiece Next Door.
