Use in article (WP:NFCC#7) | dril |
Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | As the primary means of identifying the character/persona associated with the @dril account and related works. |
Not replaceable with free media because (WP:NFCC#1) |
The image is not replaceable with any appropriate free equivalent. The image is an original illustration by the author to represent the "dril" character. All of dril's works are presently copyrighted. There are numerous other self-portraits or other images incorporating the character's face, but none by the author that are freely available. It is not currently possible to represent the pseudonymous author himself; while the identity of the author was revealed in a doxxing incident, the author remains a private individual. Even if a freely licensed image of the author were to become available, this image serves a different purpose: to identify the character associated with dril, not the author. |
Not replaceable with textual coverage because (WP:NFCC#1) |
This illustration serves as a primary means of visually identifying the character dril. While text is necessary to adequately describe the characteristics of dril, text alone is not an adequate substitute for the illustration, which contains unique visual and aesthetic information. |
Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3) | Minimal number of items: The dril avatar itself, uploaded at Dril.jpg, is also used on the page to accompany quoted tweets. That image's purpose alongside tweets is to reproduce, as closely as possible, the effect of reading dril's tweets while seeing that face, as one would on Twitter, and thus to better convey both the experience of reading dril and the corresponding "voice" that emerges when the face is paired with text. On the other hand, this image represents the author's attempt as an artist to convey an idea or a facet of the dril character through his own original illustration. The illustration is an application of the author's artistic talent, style, aesthetic, and sense of visual humor, qualities which are not otherwise visually conveyed to the reader in the article.
Minimal extent of use: The file is only used on the dril page. It is a single, square illustration from an ebook, cropped tightly to omit other elements of the page design. It is a single illustration from a work with 70 illustrations. The image is lower resolution than the original image, resized to 0.1 megapixels per the recommendations and tools at WP:IMAGERES. |
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2) |
This use does not commercially conflict with the author's ability to sell the book. The image is a low-resolution reproduction of the original illustration and is a single illustration from a book with 69 other illustrations. Furthermore, the same image has previously been used in other media as a means of identifying dril, as in this interview with Vice. The author's opportunity to make commercial use of the other illustrations in the book is preserved by reusing an image that has already been circulated by the press to promote or describe the contents of the book. |
