Description |
Constructed drawing by Drew Shiflett, Untitled #98 (watercolor, graphite, canvas, canvas threads, cheesecloth and handmade paper, 52" x 57" x 1", 2023). The image illustrates a key body of work by Drew Shiflett from the 2020s, when she produced her later "constructed drawings," layered, collaged paper and fabric amalgamations of drawing, relief and sculpture. These works have been compared to bits of ancient tapestry, Greco-Roman ruins parched by sun and time, an indecipherable private formal lexicon (of runes, topographical symbols, tally marks) or computational language, and informational textiles of the Incas or African kente cloth, among other things. This body of work and individual piece were publicly exhibited in prominent exhibitions and discussed by critics in major art journals and daily press publications. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key body of work in Drew Shiflett's career in the 2010s and 2020s: her later "constructed drawings"—layered, collaged paper and fabric constructions that straddle drawing, relief and sculpture. These handmade, hybrid works offer subtle examinations of surface, structure and texture through their attention to materials, intuitive processes, and loose patterning. They consist of monochromatic, interwoven sections of handmade paper and fabric upon which she draws repetitive and sectioned lines and marks, producing meditative, quilt-like "grids of grids." Because the article is about an artist and her work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this key body of work, which brought Shiflett ongoing recognition through exhibitions and coverage by major critics and publications. Shiflett's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Drew Shiflett, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
Other information |
The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made. |
