Summary

Description

Scientist Emeritus, NICHD Chief and Senior Research Scientist, Laboratory of Neurobiology, NIMH Senior Research Scientist, NINDB

Tasaki discovered the insulating function of myelin and explained the speed with which nerve impulses can travel along myelinated nerves. He came to the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Blindness in 1953, but also worked for the National Institute of Mental Health and National Institute of Child Health Disorders throughout his extensive career. His accomplishments, according to his obituary, included the use of dyes to observe physical changes in nerve membranes and measurements of the heat generated and absorbed by electrically stimulated nerves. Because he continued working at age 97, some estimated he was the oldest active duty scientist in the history of NIH. Throughout his time, he maintained a humility that “belied his extraordinary achievements.”
