Summary
DescriptionDowntown Crawford, Nebraska Postcard c. 1910.jpg |
English: C. 1910 postcard view of Crawford Nebraska, looking south on Second Street from Main. A number on the back of the postcard reads "11959". It is postmarked July 1912. No author is stated on the image.
The photo was taken at earliest in 1907, the year Kennedy building (the last brick building on the right side of the street) was constructed, and at latest 1912, the year the postcard is postmarked. This photo depicts a much different Crawford than exists today. The city has transformed from a booming "saloon element" town to quiet, less populous rural community. However, it is notable that all of the two-story brick buildings depicted are still standing, although in varying states of repair. As the postcard this image was scanned from was obviously published before 1978 in the United States and does not have a copyright notice printed anywhere on it, it is currently in the public domain and is therefore eligible for inclusion on Wikimedia Commons. |

Licensing
This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |

Forbes Block, built 1896. The corner partition of the building housed the Forbes Bros. Clothing store until it closed in 1934. The structure is now almost unrecognizable, as it was covered in "permastone" some years ago.
Adams Block, built in the late 1880's. This structure is the oldest commercial building in Crawford. Its exact date of construction is unknown. It now houses the Crawford Historical Museum in its south side. The building was re-fronted in 1930.
Gorton-McNair Block, built c. 1910. This building has housed a hardware store, pharmacy, and grocery store.
A.R. Kennedy Building, built 1907. This edifice was the home of Kennedy Market for almost half a century.
Dietrich Block, built 1895. The building has had its upper story removed and houses was it what built to be- a bar.
Hobson Block, built 1896. One pharmacy or another has been in the building since its construction.
A one-story building on this spot, obscured by the Jones Drug sign, was home of the original Elite Theater, owned by Georgianna Higgins. She is thought to be the first woman theater in the United States.
The postcard depicts Second Street, historically and currently the main thoroughfare in Crawford.
