Purpose of use |
As one of the first photographs of a live giant squid interacting (and especially swimming) with a human, the image depicts a historically significant and widely reported event. It is intended to show: (a) a representative image of the event itself, discussed in the adjoining text, which cannot be conveyed in text alone; (b) the appearance of the specimen in its live state and its size relative to an adult human diver; (c) the natural posture of the giant squid when swimming freely and interacting with the diver, its arms splayed. |
Replaceable? |
Irreplaceable as it depicts a historical event of which no free images exist. |
