Summary

[edit]

The author of the original artwork is unknown but was commissioned by The District Grocery Stores (DGS) prior to 1936.

This logo was recovered from an Ad published in The Washington Post, Nov 18, 1936, pg. FCR7 and cleaned up in Gimp.

The District Grocery Stores (DGS) would be the Copyright owner. The District Grocery Stores were dissolved by its members in 1972. It is unclear who owns the copyright today following its closure.

This early logo published at a low resolution in a US newspaper in 1936 is one of the rare representation of this logo. It will be used on the District Grocery Stores (DGS) page to show the evolution of the logo over the life of the cooperative.

Because it is a non-free logo, there is almost certainly no free representation. Any substitute that is not a derivative work would fail to convey the meaning intended, would tarnish or misrepresent its image, or would fail its purpose of identification or commentary.
