Robert J. and Cornelia Lewis (Hndsou) Emerson: attended University of North Carolina i.. eraduatinu* as chemist, 1879: assisted 1 yr. in lab. U. of N. C.: became res. Balto., 1881, where he entered the retail drug business and established a factory; during years 1SS4-18S0. prop, three retail drug stores; originated formula of Bromo-Selzer and withdrew from retail bus.: organized Emerson Drug Co.. 1891. and is its pres.: also pres. Citro Chemical W<»rks ofAm.; 5 years dir. Drovers & Mechanics Bank of Balto.; erected the Emerson Il.tcl, Kallo. and Calvert streets, at a cost of $1,000,000; has enviable war record, in 1894 organizing Md. Naval Reserve, which mustered into service in 1898. under his personal command; commissioned lieutenant in U. S. N.. in command of Fifth Lighthouse Dist.; elected capt. Md. Naval Brigade, resigning 1901 to cruise around world. 105
