Summary

Description
English: This figure illustrates the initial steps of decomposing a tensor of rank two into its components. (a) A force F acts on a small surface dS where G is the vector that represents the area and orientation of this surface element. (b) the projections of this surface element dSx, dSy, and dSz on the yz, xz, and xy planes, respectively, are illustrated. The x, y, and z components of G (not illustrated) represent the areas and orientations of these three projections. The total effect of the force F on dS can be computed by considering the effect of each of its three components, fx, fy, and fz on each of the three projections dSx, dSy, and dSz.
