De extravagante feesten van de ‘Tulpensultan’ zorgden voor veel onrust onder de bevolking. Op 28 september 1730 brak een opstand uit onder leiding van Patrona Halil, een Albanese zeeman. De rebellen slaagden de rebellen erin de sultan af te zetten en installeerden zijn neef Mahmud I.Nadat Mahmud I de troon had bestegen, bleven de rebellen voor onrust zorgen. Zij probeerden posities in de regering te bemachtigen en eisten steeds meer invloed. Mahmud nodigde hen met een smoes uit op het paleis, waar zij één voor één werden omgebracht. Rechts wordt Patrona Halil overmeesterd, terwijl links de dienaar die op zijn paard paste al is vermoord. In het midden ziet men de groot-vizier Damad Ibrahim pasja uit zijn paleis komen, vergezeld door een van de opperrechters en een van de thesauriers. Uit de andere deur komen de admiraal en de andere opperrechter naar buiten, terwijl links een officier van de wacht bevelen geeft aan een groep janitsaren in krijgstenue. Op de achtergrond kan men nog zien hoe de dienaren van de groot-vizier worden afgeslacht. Hiermee kwam de opstand definitief tot een eind.
