Creator: Francis Bedford (1816 - 1894) Date: c. 1880 Format: Albumen print Collection: National Media Museum Collection Inventory no: 1990-5037_B1_2832 Construction of Dartmouth Castle, on the far bank of the estuary, was begun in the late 15th century by local merchants wanting to protect their cargo. In the foreground is Kingswear Castle. These castles acted as a double defence system when the area was under threat since a chain was extended across the river between the two to form a barrier.
