Source This shot is reproduced p66 A Centenary of Rugby League (Heads, Ian and Middleton, David 2008 MacMillan Sydney) in its original format - it was published on the front cover of the Australian Town & Country Journal on June 5, 1912. The caption there tells the reality that it actually features "w:Dan Frawley in action" - it's Frawley with the ball (a left winger) in the foreground and Messenger (an outside centre) who is in the background.
