DescriptionDale Abbey 2019 chapter house double grave slab 01.jpg
English: Double grave slab, almost certainly of a married couple. Each incised with a cross fleury, originally coloured red. Dexter (right, but left as viewed): cross accompanied by a pair if shears, indicating a woman. Sinister: sword and shield, probably charged with a horseshoe, indicating a man of knightly class or military profession. Probably from a tomb of donors to the abbey who asked to be buried in it. Cf. Hope, W. H. St. J. (1879) On the recent excavations on the site of Dale Abbey, Derbyshire, p. 108-9.
