English: In the 1940s, more and more switching yards and major North American railways began operating diesel-electric locomotives. The dieselisation of Canada’s power motive and switcher fleet began during World War II. This trend continued throughout the 1950s, and the last steam locomotives were removed from service in 1960.

In 1940, American Locomotive Works introduced the S-2 model. This switcher locomotive was equipped with a 1000-horsepower turbocharged Alco 539T engine specially designed to reduce the height of the engine compartment to give the crew a better view of the track. All of Canada’s major railway companies purchased these very popular locomotives. No. 7077 was the first diesel-electric production locomotive built in Canada. It was unveiled with great pomp at the 1948 Canadian International Trade Fair in Toronto as the first production-line diesel locomotive built in Canada by Montreal Locomotive Works. The Canadian Pacific Railway operated it until 1984.

Even though it was used mainly in the vicinity of the Lambton yard, on the outskirts of Toronto, this locomotive was configured for limited road service. It was therefore equipped with classification light supports, a horn and an illuminated box displaying the route number.

No. 7077 was removed from service in 1984 and it joined the collection the following year.
