Object history
Deutsch: Der Ort Wiedergeltingen war im 12. Jahrhundert im Besitz der Welfen. Mauerreste im Gemeindegebiet zeugen ihrer ehemaligen Burg. Herzog Welf VI. hielt sich hier nachweislich auf. Um 1147 gründeten sie das Prämonstratenserkloster Steingaden. Zum Stiftungsgut gehörten auch welfische Güter in Wiedergeltingen. Bis zur Säkularisation 1803 war das Kloster im Besitz der kirchlichen und gerichtlichen Rechte. Der Löwe im Gemeindewappen ist der welfische Greifenlöwe mit Schnabel und Krallenfüßen. Er ist auch im Stifterwappen in Steingaden aus dem Jahr 1441 zu sehen. Im eigentlichen Stiftswappen standen ein Turm auf drei Quadern, redend für den Ortsnamen Steingaden, der 'befestigtes Turmhaus' bedeutet. Die Farben Rot und Silber sind nach neueren Erkenntnissen die Farben des welfischen Stammwappens.
