Object history Der Wellenbalken, ein heraldisches Flusssymbol, weist auf die Lage des Landkreises an Donau und Isar hin. Die Feldfarbe Gold spielt auf die ertragreichen Fluren des Gäubodens an. Der grüne Dreiberg versinnbildlicht die Berge des Bayerischen Waldes, gibt aber auch das historische Wappen der Benediktinerabtei Niederalteich (grüner Dreiberg in Gold) wieder. Der schwarze Doppeladler stammt aus dem Wappen der Benediktinerabtei Metten und bezieht sich auf den legendären Klostergründer Karl den Großen. Beide Klöster waren seit dem 8. Jahrhundert von großer Bedeutung für die kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung des weit in den Bayerischen Wald reichenden Kreisgebiets. Der Kreistag des um die Stadt Deggendorf und Teile des früheren Landkreises Vilshofen vergrößerten neuen Landkreises Deggendorf beschloss 1973, das frühere Wappen unverändert zu übernehmen, da die Wappenbilder auch für das erweiterte Gebiet wesentliche Aussagekraft haben.
