Picture description Framed portrait of Máximo Gómez y Báez (1836-1905)
(Gómez was Cuban General during the Spanish-American-Cuban War, 1895-1898, and during the US-American occupation of Cuba 1899-1902. After the grant of independence to Cuba by the U.S. government (with limited freedom) on the 20th of May, 1902, Gómez could have been elected president but did not wish to accept public office.)
