The picture provided was not a sidewinder, but a prairie rattlesnake, Crotalus viridis. I wrote a dissertation on rattlesnakes, with particular focus on sidewinders, so I am sure about this one.
The specimen is now in the collection of the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley.
