Summary
English: Caricature of the Crisis of May 16, 1877: Léon Gambetta, representing the republican majority in the Chamber of Deputies, bursts from a jack-in-the-box before President Patrice de MacMahon, a veteran marshal whose monarchist loyalties are represented by the fleur de lis above him. In the upper-right, topped by a phrygian cap and the number 363 (referring to the Manifesto of the 363), a storm cloud thunders above the president. Gambetta delivers the iconic closing line of his address in Lille on August 15 1877: "Submit or resign." The caption at the bottom reads: "Marshal Mac-Mahon: A brave soldier who didn't dare say 'Here I am, here I remain!'" Illustration by Jean Robert, from a contemporary postcard (colorized) |
