Summary

Description
English: One of two angels on capitals of columns of one of the arcades in St Matthew's parish church, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, this one holding an escutcheon showing the arms of Courtenay of Upcott (Or three torteaux), impaling in chief A lion passant guardant coward (unknown family) and in base three birds (unknown family). The other angel holds a shield with a single impalement, A lion rampant guardant coward. A junior branch of the Courtenay family of Powderham, Devon, was seated at Upcott in the parish of Cheriton Fitzpaine in the 16th century, although the Courtenay family of Tiverton Castle (Earls of Devon), had long been feudal overlords of the manor of Upcott. The arms represent a member of the Courtenay family of Upcott and one of his wives, the other with two successive wives.
