English: Gilt bronze head of a bodhisattva, probably Maitreya, excavated from Hwangnyong Temple (Hwangnyongsa) the most important temple in the capital of Silla, Gumseong (present-day Gyeongju). Noting the similarities of the head to South Korean National Treasure no. 83 and Japan's National Treasure no. 1, scholars point to this fragment as one of the many pieces of evidence that suggest those two national treasures were made in south-east Korea, the domain of the Silla Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period. |
