Summary
[edit]Description | This is a portion of a UK area Consol (Sonne) navigation map originally prepared in 1942 and then "overlaid" with additional information in 1946 when an additional broadcaster was set up Northern Ireland. The new station, Bush Mills, is indicated by the green cross-in-a-circle outside of Coleraine, north of Belfast. The green lines radiating to the west indicate the "counts" when using this station - after first determining their rough location to select one of the pie-shaped areas between the thicker green lines labeled "60", the navigator would then listen to the signal from the station and count the number of dots of dashes they heard until they received the "equisignal" sound, a steady tone. this number was then looked up on this chart to select one of the lines labeled "10" through "60" to determine the bearing to the station. The red lines are used in the same way, but indicate the bearing lines to the Consol station in Stavanger, Norway, one of the original German Sonne sites and the original reason for this map's publication in 1942. |

Purpose of use in article (WP:NFCC#8) | This map of the use of Consol was published by the UK GSGS mapping service in 1942 to allow British airmen to navigate using the German Sonne navigation system. It demonstrates the basic navigation principle, showing the navigational lines radiating from a Consol station and giving instructions on how to use it. |
