The front panel of the Colossus during operation. The Strowger switches, which in the 1940s were easily available and commonly used to as switches in automatic telephone exchanges, are clearly visible. Behind the panel are racks of thermionic valves. The lamps (mid-left) are arranged in columns marked off as 1000s, 100s, 10s and 1s. Lamps are arrayed in 2 rows of 5 representing the digits 0 to 9.

Not visible: far to the right a frame held a paper tape being recycled at great speed.

To the left was a teletype printing a stream of characters.

The prevailing sounds were the clicking of the stepping switches and the whirring of the tape frame.

Photograph taken by a somewhat stunned Tony Sidaway. Colossus lives again!
