Summary
DescriptionCollingham (Notts), St John the Baptist (24568085483).jpg |
There was originally a church here in Saxon times, and Collingham is unusual in having two churches, at the north and south of the village. This is probably due to there being two separate Manors belonging to different landowners, having a church on his lands would ensure the title of "Gentleman" by the law of King Athelstan. The present church dates from the 12th century onwards and consists of a western tower, nave with north and south aisles, chancel, vestry, and south porch. The tower is of three stages topped with crocketted pinnacles, the oldest parts date from the mid-13th century. The upper stage is perpendicular, the pinnacles later still. There are five bells. The nave has three-bay arcades, the north dating from the 12th century with zigzag and lozenge patterns. One label stop has a beast's head with a man's head in its mouth. There is a piscina in the east wall of the north aisle and a tombstone from 1573. The south arcade dates from the 13th century with head label stops. Again, there is a piscina at the east end indicating the existence of a Chapel. A clerestory was added in the 15th century, and the brackets of the former roof can be seen in the nave. The chancel dates from the 14th century with a perpendicular east window. There is a low side window on the south wall. The east wall bears painted texts either side of the window which are very faded and are about to be restored. The chancel arch is 13th century. There is a 20th century screen with a Rood above. The font is thought to date from 1250. The church was restored in 1864, the tower in 1886, and further restoration in 1890. There are two scratch dials, one on the south wall of the chancel, the other on the east wall of the south entrance, although this may just be graffiti or a Mason's mark. All of the stained-glass is from the 19th or 20th century. There is a two manual organ on the north side of the chancel. |
