aveseven hundred good Militia who may be depended upon.One Company, about sixty freeholders, are formed into Ar-tillery, and are now practising with great assiduity. I haveanother select regiment of one thousand rnen, commanded byhalf-pay officers, and composed of privates, most of whomserved under these officers during the late war. They havetwo Companies of Artillery and one of Horse, and can beassembled in Halifax in six days notice, part of them sooner.This evidently refers to a corps of the Loyalists (known asthe Nova Scotia Legion), many thousands of whom had set-tled in the province, and who furnished the finest possible ma-terial for a sturdy, well-disciplined and experienced militia.Three regiments were enrolled in the western part of theprovince, respectively commanded by Colonels Barclay, Mil-lidge and Taylor; in the latter battalion were many Acadians,—once expelled—now welcomed.
