"Símbolos de fé, força e esperança completam o visual da bandeira do Recife. São eles: a cruz, representando a colonização portuguesa, que trouxe o cristianismo para o Brasil; o leão neerlandês coroado, em amarelo, remetendo ao escudo de armas de Maurício de Nassau e ao Leão do Norte, apelido adquirido por Pernambuco pelo seu potencial histórico de lutas e, por fim, o sol e a estrela, ambos em amarelo, aludindo ao nosso astro maior e à representação da república brasileira, considerada originária das terras pernambucanas, através do movimento de 1817.."
