Figlio primogenito di Luigi XIV e di Madame de Montespan, legittimato nel 1673, Luigi Augusto di Borbone venne riconosciuto come di ereditare il trono francese in assenza di principi legittimi. Alla morte del re, gli venne affidato il comando delle delle truppe della Casa del Re che il Reggente, Filippo d'Orléans, gli aveva tolto in seguito all'annullamento del testamento di Luigi XIV. Il Duca del Maine mantenne la supervisione dell'educazione di Luigi XV.
