Christ Church Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral. It is the second church to bear the name, the first being a church in Old Montreal that was destroyed by fire in 1856. This Neo-Gothic building was completed in 1859.
Although acclaimed for its architecture, the church suffered from serious engineering flaws. The soft ground could not support its original stone tower and steeple, which began to sink and lean. The steeple was removed in 1927; a new foundation was poured in 1939 and in 1940, a lighter aluminum steeple was erected.
