Summary

Description
English: The Charles Sumner School located at 1201 17th Street, NW in Washington, D.C. The school was one of three public facilities constructed after the Civil War for the education of Washington, D.C.'s African American community. The building was named in honor of United States Senator Charles Sumner, an ardent abolitionist who opposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, advocated the end of slavery in Washington, D.C., and assisted in founding the Freedman's Bureau. Designed by local architect Adolf Cluss in 1872, the Charles Sumner School is an example of Romanesque Revival architecture and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building now houses a museum, conference center, and an archive for the DC public school system.
