English: Commander Charles Lorain Carpenter, U.S. Navy (center right with moustache), just after being rescued after the light cruiser USS Helena (CL-50) was sunk in the Kula Gulf, Solomon Islands, on board the destroyer USS Nicholas (DD-449), 6 July 1943. Charles L. Carpenter later rose to the rank of Rear Admiral.
