Gravestone of Henry Vick behind the Chapel of the Cross in Mannsdale, Madison County, Mississippi. I'm adding this to my "Interesting Graves" set not because the tombstone itself is particularly interesting but because of the story that goes with it. Henry Vick was killed in a duel just a few days before he was to marry Helen Johnstone at Chapel of the Cross, the chapel conceived by Helen's father and built after his death by Helen's mother on the grounds of Annandale, the family's plantation in Madison County, Mississippi. It is said that the distraught Helen wore her wedding dress to Henry's funeral and that, even though she did ultimately marry somebody else, she mourned for Henry the rest of her life -- and into death. There have been many reports of the ghost of Helen (aka "The Bride of Annandale"), dressed in white, sitting on the bench near Henry's grave -- the bench shown in the background of this picture.
