"Il dipinto, a destinazione privata, era già stato considerato ritratto di Cesare Borgia, il Duca Valentino da G. Lochis in una lettera del suo epistolario (Epistolario Lochis, 1822-1859). Lochis acquistò l'opera da Carlo Francesco Longhi" [1]

"Il fiero gentiluomo, in passato identificato con Cesare Borgia, è raffigurato a mezzo busto, sullo sfondo di un paesaggio temporalesco attraversato da due misteriose figure. Seppur influenzato dalla ritrattistica di Giorgione e del giovane Tiziano, Altobello sviluppa uno stile personale, caratterizzato da un disegno nervoso, spia del suo interesse per la grafica nordica, e dall’uso di colori freddi e metallici, come le tonalità argentee del cielo, il verde oliva del paesaggio, il blu petrolio della veste."
